2nd best day of PI
2nd best days
of pi or π (complete references for items of a factual nature can be found in
Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi
Today, 3-14-15 is one of
many days that consist the group called the 2nd best days of pi.
Basically this group includes all March 14 in the year 15, 115, 215,…2015, 2115
and so on. The best day of pi was March
14, 1592 (3.141592).
The mathematical constant
of pi is believed to have been a part of early Egyptian buildings as early as
2589 BC because the ratio of height to perimeter of the Great Pyramid of Giza
comes to 6.2857 which is approximately 2π.
Tablets have been found in
Egypt and Babylon where pi is represented to 1% of its actual value. The Greeks in 250 BC came up with Archimedes' constant which is a polygonal algorithm used to
calculate pi. The Persians, Chinese and
Indians all had mathematical representations to calculate pi.
In the 16th and 17th
centuries a new method for calculating pi was developed called the infinite
series. These series moved the
calculation of pi to more accurate findings.
Many of the previous findings were limited to how many digits pi could
be calculated (38 being the prevailing theory around 1630 AD). These numbers often calculated with
variations and divergence.
The infinite series method
converged to a more accurate number at a quicker rate than did polygonal
algorithms. In the 1700s there were
other significant findings for the number pi that had nothing to do with calculating
the number more accurately. Solving the
Basel problem, Riemann zeta function, proving pi to be irrational and
transcendental in nature. Somes like
some people I know.
It was not until 1706 that
the Greek letter pi was used to represent the number.
In 1949, two Americans
calculated pi to 1,120 digits using a desktop calculator.
So what is the importance
of pi other than to be able to say you know more digits of pi than somebody
else (Think the nerdish way to say I can throw a ball further). There are many reasons to pi is important
from being able to calculate various components of round objects like volume,
area, circumference. It is believed that
pi to 39 digits is sufficient to accurately calculate the volume of the known
universe precise to one atom.
I have said before when
discussing scientific items that I believe things like physics and pi were part
of the creation of our planet and universe.
Now I realize my belief that God created the world and the universe is
not so popular amongst many who would be a part of these type math and science
discussions (many not all). But I
believe firmly that God created things like pi while he was creating the
universe. Why? A question I hope to ask
one day. Maybe to prevent those of us
who could (the majority) for having the ability to destroy it. There was a Stargate episode where people on
a planet could not see the aliens they thought were Gods in their true form
until they could solve certain riddles that were based on math and
science. NO I AM NOT SAYING I THINK GOD IS AN ALIEN! BUT maybe that is how God will
determine when Jesus will return, when we can figure out all the mathematical
and scientific riddles he left us to discover. Maybe that will be the only way we can understand the answers he will give us. My guess is no we use technology to often to be lazy or do bad things. Who knows, I certainly don’t. But
the fact that pi has been calculated to 10 trillion digits, but no group of
numbers ever repeat themselves. Is there
a hidden message in this?
What I do know, is
Barnabas keeps asking what flavor of Pie we are having. “What do you mean no pie, it’s pie day”
